Justice

Justice is balancing all dualitiy to hover in a space free of the labels that go along with binary thinking. Going beyond thinking in terms of black/white, good/bad, male/female etc. is no small feat but it is necessary on anyone’s path to true freedom. The figure of Justice in the card is a female (?) personification holding a sword in her right hand and the scales of justice in her left. Justice is the balance of the intellect (from the Tarot suit of Swords) as well as emotion (the scales mirror the Tarot suit of Cups) through human judgment. The wisest decisions can be made by discarding the extremes; not by indulging in our mind’s urge to label and impulsively react. Balance is key.

Jayne County was the lead singer of Wayne County & the Electric Chairs when she went by that name. As a gay man in New York City, she took part in the legendary Stonewall Riots before ultimately rising to punk fame in London. Jayne was one of the earliest Transgender icons having publicly identified herself as a woman in 1979. Her story is of triumph over not only creative and sexual adversity, but legal and cultural prejudice as well. Having lived as both a man and as a woman, the struggle to live is the same but different. No one is exempt from hardship and most hardships are rooted in imbalance. Justice isn’t about special consideration for anyone. With a mind to never repeat historic mistakes in reverse, Justice must seek equality based on a fundamental belief in our shared humanity and the right of every soul to fully blossom regardless of how they choose to do that.
