The Hermit looks to the past (to the left) while walking towards the future (the right edge of the card). To our eyes, it’s comical to watch him look to the light while walking into the shadows the light creates. One thing many loners have is a high intelligence that has allowed them to see things in ways the crowd does not. If you thought and felt differently than your peers you would similarly retire to your own solitude. If the Major Arcana tells the story of a spiritual adventure, then this card is emblematic of the process of spending time alone to truly understand yourself and by extension, reality.

Joey Ramone of The Ramones grew up in Queens, NY and is one of the first and most icon Punks of all time. Why? Because Punk is bizarro mainstream pop. All of the clean cut smiles and sugary optimism of the music before Punk, had no room for someone like Joey who was intelligent, sensitive and courageous. The world loves Joey Ramone because he was an underdog in life; having grown up a misfit with crippling OCD, there was little else Joey could have been. Except…Punk took all his shortcomings and put them onstage for the world to see, and we all sang along to celebrate Humanity as it is; imperfect.
